Dr. Thomas is an Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies, Sociology, and Demography. He completed his Ph.D. in Demography at the University of Pennsylvania in December 2004. His dissertation, The Demography of Migrant Populations in South Africa, was built upon the work done for his Master's in Demography, which was also earned at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Thomas also has a Master's in Development Administration from Western Michigan University, and as an undergraduate student, he completed his B.A. degree with honors at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. He previously worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at both the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies and the Harvard Initiative for Global Health. Dr. Thomas is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society and has served as a consultant to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank. His research interests include demography, US immigration, international migration, development and social change in the Third World, and Diaspora populations in the United States. Dr Thomas is also currently a Faculty Research Associate at Penn States’ Population Research Institute.
